Fewer young people are entering hospitality as a career, a new report suggests. The study details were released this week by Get My First Job – the HIT Training and apprenticeship platform.

Results showed that a massive 53% of 16 to 20 year-olds did not think building a career in the hospitality industry offered them long-term satisfaction or opportunities.

In fact, the study revealed that most young people considered jobs in the hospitality sector as temporary positions. These temporary positions were considered necessary as step on to positions in other industries.

Many young people stated that a job in hospitality was a stop-gap role to earn money while studying another discipline. Furthermore, the study, which was conducted on Generation Z participants, showed that the majority had made the decision before leaving high school.

Work Experience

Work experience was shown to be the largest swaying factor in career development for young people. Their introduction to the work force and advice provided by teachers and parents, was the second biggest factor on their career and further education choices.

However, interestingly, the numbers of students opting to study at university has dropped significantly over the past two decades. And more than 60% of students said they’d consider an apprenticeship style entry onto the job market over a degree and university education.

This fact alone bodes well for the hospitality industry, which is well known for it’s apprenticeship educational programmes. A spokesperson for HIT Training explained that hospitality schools should be much more vocal in terms of the benefits of their courses. Students should be shown the benefits of hospitality work, rather than seeing it as a stepping-stone while working on another career choice.

Hospitality careers

A career in hospitality can result in extensive overseas travel and promotional opportunities for young and ambitious workers. It’s an industry with massive scope too. From front of house to catering, marketing, I.T. events and management, there is a role for every skill required in the running of a property.

“Experiences, development opportunities and working culture are of greater importance to this workforce. And all are key attributes which need to be highlighted as part of the recruitment process,” says Jill Whitaker, of HIT Training.

She explained: “As professionals within the hospitality industry, we have a duty of care to showcase what a career in hospitality can offer to all ages.

Whitaker went on to say that the research shows that key influences in the younger generations’ career choices are during school, work experience and the views of their teachers and parents.

“Let’s maximise these opportunities and change perceptions to make sure that when they do consider their future occupation, hospitality is in the running,” she added.

There are many skills required by the hospitality industry, but so much of it is about communication and how to deal with people. Required attributes in young applicants are as follows.

Good rapport with people

This is essential, as the hospitality industry is about making people feel happy. From managing the spa to the bar, or being the doorman, a great people person attitude is essential.

An exciting career

Joining the hospitality industry provided numerous opportunities to diversify and gain skills and training. Rising through the ranks to property management, restaurant management, marketing and communications and guest relations, are all very real possibilities. Not on that, but while salaries at the starter end can be small, those in management positions can earn a very comfortable living.

A love of travel

This is a job where travel opportunities abound. If you want to see different cultures and work in different countries, it’s the industry to go for. From managing ski chalets in Switzerland to running a resort in Mayasia – or a business hotel in Hong Kong – the opportunities to experience new places abound.

Creative thinkers required

It’s the people working within it that make the hospitality industry successful. So creativity in the workplace is always encouraged. From faster and more efficient ways to carry out services, to managing event planning and to entertaining guests, using creative skills is an essential part of the hospitality industry.
